Re: Hallucinations in temporal lobe epilepsy

I was diagnosed with TLE 2 years ago but I'm not sure. They can't find any physical evidence, so take everything I say with a grain of salt - I'm not a neurologist. I hallucinate at night and sometimes during the day when I'm sick, but they can be milder than yours. I don't know. They also scare me when I have the feeling that I get goosebumps and, figuratively speaking, the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I'm alert and aware of my surroundings, but I hear car doors slamming, lockers slamming (although I was in a psychiatric ward at the time), I see friendly staff like "angels" and unfriendly people appearing demonic. I think it's an aura as not only one psychiatrist thinks I have TLE and I've been fired from the government (I'm a retired military man). I hear claw scraping on walls at night and stuff dealing with hyper religiosity. I keep journaling and making to-do lists to combat my worries and it helps to analyze my own thinking so I don't worry as much at night. I think night is the time to wrap up the day and plan for the future. This is when your mind is worried about the future as some things are impossible to achieve or fix and this causes emotional distress. I think this emotional stress triggers these hallucinations. I'm not a neurologist and was only referred to one - the government let me down because they diagnosed me with TLE but never referred me to a neurologist to be sure. I take Trileptal (1200mg daily), Lamotragine (100mg) and Prozac (60mg). When I was very "sick" in 2003, I was in psychiatry for 3-4 months. I ended up asking to go on Prozac because nothing had changed and I was afraid I would be stuck for the rest of my life. Twenty-four hours after the first dose of Prozac my psychiatrist said I was 100% better and three days later I was off for 2 hours. Perhaps the drug interaction counteracts this or you are becoming too used to the drugs. Talk to your doctors and see what they say. At the end of the day, it is your treatment and you must make the decision to change, increase or decrease your medication if necessary. I'm just explaining my situation. I hope this helps reassure you, at least that someone else has them too.

I just googled hallucinations

I just googled hallucinations and epilepsy and found this post. I was previously diagnosed with epilepsy last year. I see spiders all the time too. I just woke up from a nap and saw one on the wall. The same reaction every time. My heart is racing, I turn on the light and nothing. They are always on the wall behind me and have about 1 inch belly. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but I have to say it's comforting to know I'm not alone.

Ermagawd. I'm so glad I just found this post. I was diagnosed with TLE in 2015. I have responded poorly to most medications and even when they help with the major seizures they do not eliminate the absence or partial seizures. After that recent bout of adverse drug reactions, I've noticed that lately I've started seeing things sneaking up on me or in the corners of my vision. It really scares me. I don't sleep well either, have nightmares about snakes and bugs and weird things like that. While I hate that other people are dealing with this too, it makes me feel MUCH better to see that I'm not alone with these weird hallucinations.

Thank you for posting! My brother has had horrific visual, tactile, auditory and gustatory hallucinations of spiders and insects since being diagnosed with traumatic brain injury and epilepsy last summer. They crawl into his wounds and spray red and black clouds. You get into the crotch, head, groceries, fridge, closets etc. It was a nightmare. He recently discovered that if he turned the TV down and darkened the room, they would disappear.

Yes I had the exact same thing

Yes, I had the exact same thing for seven years when I was little. I don't want to tell the whole story, but maybe a little helps. I used to wake up at night and walk, sometimes I try to jump from the balcony (I'm still alive thanks to my mother and grandmother). I didn't remember major seizures, but I remembered smaller ones, or I suddenly realized I was on my feet, but the beginning was always the same. It scares me to this day and I've spent so many years searching for specific words to describe this feeling. It clicked a few weeks ago while watching Stranger Things. The boy described his condition and my brain froze. It was an incredible fear that I had never experienced before. The white dots float in the air. Over the years it stopped. It would only happen if I was under a lot of stress or under the influence of drugs. The bizarre part is that sometimes I get really curious to try it (to understand what it is) and if I focus and stress my brain I get a very smooth version of it. At that time (I'm from one of the Baltic countries and my seizures started right after the collapse of the Soviet Union) they didn't know, or they didn't have medication or God knows why, how to treat it properly, me and another boy were the only ones with the same symptoms. I've been through so many experimental drug concoctions that it scares me, but eventually they got it right. Hold on!

If you have taken medication

If you've been taking the drug for a while, you might get used to it. My Nero husband said every now and then when the seizures get more frequent the medication suddenly needs to be adjusted because his body/brain is getting used to it and it's not helping that much! I hope it helps.
