The Hicks and Kilpatrick families have owned the Apple Barn since 1972. However, the Kilpatrick families take a more active role. They lived here for a while and built most of the small businesses around it.

What is the history of the Apple Barn in Pigeon Forge?

The farmhouse dates back to the 1920s, but the Mullendore family owned the surrounding land before then. They used it to raise cattle and grow tobacco; the area around the farm is very fertile and is perfect for agriculture.

In the 1970s, Bill Kilpatrick, his wife Georgia, and Bon Hicks, a hardware store owner, purchased the property. Subsequently, the Kilpatricks decided to renovate the house to live in it. They especially liked the spacious grounds when their children were growing up.

Bill planted some apple trees on the site in 1976; he was interested in horticulture and thought he would see how they grew. the answer wasvery good!

The trees flourished on the fertile soil. This of course led to an influx of apples, which the Kilpatricks began selling each fall. They also got a cider press and started making cider.

I'm sure you can guess what happened next! The business grew due to the immense popularity of their cider. They renovated what is now the apple barn and opened the Cider House.

They also started making their famous apple pies, which they sold for the first time on market day in the city. However, the apple pies were so popular that they created their own kitchen and general store. You can still buy an apple pie here today, but they also sell other local delicacies.

In 1986 the first restaurant was created and in 1991 the Kilpatricks opened the dairy and candy factory.

By the turn of the millennium, the Kilpatricks replanted their trees (as they live for 20-30 years). Business is booming, so there's a good chance they'll plant a few more trees again when the time comes.

When is the best time to visit the Apple Barn?

The best time to visit the apple barn is definitely in the fall. That's when the apples will be fresh, fresh off the trees, and there will be more cider and apple pie on sale than you could ever eat in your life!

Different types of apples ripen at various times during the fall, but the apple harvest typically begins in late August and runs through October. So if you visit in October, the recipes will include many different types of apples.

However, Apple Barn is worth visiting at other times! Some of the apple products are available year-round. Plus, you can explore the shops and restaurants, try great southern food, and stroll through the gardens, which are beautiful any time of year.
